She had, however, never done this before.
There was no apparent reason for Jennifer to have picked today as "the" day. She hadn't woken up feeling particularly purposeful, nor had anything happened that had pressed her into the decision. It had actually appeared among her thoughts apropos of nothing. But once it had manifested itself centre stage in her mind, all her other thoughts seemed to hush themselves, leaving only this exquisite idea to soliloquize to an audience of one. And she was rapt.
Today, she would not ride the elevator to the top alone. Today, she would be there when he arrived. They would wait for the elevator together. When the doors dinged open, she would get into the elevator before him, and position herself as close to him as she could get without being conspicuous. The doors would close.
Once the idea had come into her head, and she had understood its importance and its rightness, once she had accepted her course of action for the day, she had gone back to work. It had taken little effort to put her mind back to what she had been doing. She enjoyed her review of the security logs from the previous night. They were absurdly mundane and the entries, constructed to remotely resemble English grammar, always made her giggle. Despite the bland reports, as she sat behind the front desk a small thrill would tickle its way up her back and down to her panties. Her excitement would not be contained, it could only be reigned in. When these little stutters of electricity would pass through her, she would take a moment to enjoy them and imagine a floor or two of the upcoming ride.
She had thought of the idea 2 weeks after she had first seen him cross the lobby; back straight, longish stride. There had been confidence and tenderness in the way he had held himself. It had made her want to be held by him. Since that first sighting, she had watched him. His quotidian appearance was always during off-peak hours; if he arrived in the morning, he came in after 10:30 when the lobby was fairly deserted. Same M.O. in the afternoon. She had deduced that he didn't work at the building and wasn't likely to be attending meetings on 60 either. He never had anything on him that indicated work, no brief case, papers, she hadn't even seen a cell phone. At some point 2 weeks after she had become aware of him, the trip had come to her and she realized how much she desired him.
